The line graph shows how much motorists in California and Texas paid on average for a gallon of petrol at six-month intervals between January 2005 and July 2009.
Overall, prices in the two states moved in tandem, climbing unevenly to a sharp peak near the end of the period before collapsing and then partially recovering. California was the more expensive state at every point, although the gap varied.
In January 2005, a gallon cost $1.96 in California and $1.74 in Texas. By January 2006 the two prices had almost converged at around $2.40, only about five cents apart. After rising further, both dipped temporarily in January 2007, when the Texan figure fell back to about $2.07 and the gap widened to over 50 cents. The upward trend soon resumed, culminating in highs of $4.48 and $3.96 in July 2008, each more than double the 2005 level.
Within six months, however, prices had plummeted to $1.92 in California and $1.68 in Texas, wiping out all the gains made since 2005 and leaving both marginally below their starting points. A partial recovery ensued, with the Californian price rebounding to $2.87 and the Texan one to $2.34 by July 2009. Since the former rose faster, the gap ended at 53 cents, more than twice its initial size.
