The line graph tracks the proportion of adults in one country who used each of five forms of communication at least once a week over the decade from 1998 to 2008.
Overall, the two newer technologies, mobile phones and email, gained ground rapidly, whereas the three traditional methods all finished well below their starting levels. By the end of the period, the mobile phone had replaced the landline as the most widely used means of communication.
Mobile phone use rose more than sixfold, from 13% of adults in 1998 to 85% in 2008, with the fastest growth in the first two years, when the figure reached 36%. It overtook the landline between 2004 and 2006. Email also rose steeply, from an even lower base, climbing from 6% to 68%; it passed letters shortly after 2002 and had moved ahead of the landline by 2008.
The landline was used by 88% of adults at the start and declined only gradually until 2002 (82%), after which the fall quickened, leaving it at 61%, in third place. Letter writing dropped steadily from 54% to 19%, roughly a third of its original level. Fax, the least used method from 2002 onwards, peaked at 27% in 2000 before sliding to 6%, exactly the level at which email had begun.
