The line graph plots the proportion of Australian men and women aged between 18 and 34 who had a job, recorded every five years from 1976 to 2011.
Overall, young men were more likely to be working than young women at every point, but the two rates moved in opposite directions: the female figure climbed substantially while the male one ended lower than it began. Consequently, the gender gap narrowed dramatically.
In 1976, 89% of men in this age group were in paid work. The rate eased to around 85% in 1981 and 84% in 1986, then fell sharply to hit a low of about 77% in 1991. A steady recovery brought it back to about 84% by 2006, but it slipped again to 81% in 2011, eight percentage points below its starting level.
Female employment stood at only 52% in 1976, yet it rose without interruption for the next thirty years. The steepest gain came between 1981 and 1986, from roughly 55% to 61%, after which growth slowed to a single point by 1991. The figure peaked at about 71% in 2006 before dipping to 70%. As a result, the difference between the sexes shrank from 37 points to just 11, less than a third of its original size.
