The bar chart provides a comparison of the time undergraduates and postgraduates at five universities, labelled A to E, spent studying on their own in an average week.
Overall, postgraduates devoted more time to independent study than undergraduates at four of the five institutions. The size of the gap varied enormously, however: it was at its widest at University D and all but disappeared at University E, and University C was the only place where undergraduates did more.
The contrast was starkest at University D, which recorded both the highest figure on the chart, 22.3 hours for postgraduates, and the lowest, 9.6 hours for undergraduates. Postgraduates there thus studied alone for well over twice as long, a difference of 12.7 hours. Universities A and B showed the same pattern on a smaller scale: postgraduates put in 21.4 and 18.6 hours respectively, compared with 14.5 and 11.2 hours for undergraduates, a margin of roughly seven hours in each case.
The reverse was true at University C, where undergraduates averaged 17.8 hours, the most of any undergraduate group, and exceeded their postgraduate counterparts (16.4 hours) by 1.4 hours. At University E the two groups were virtually identical, at 13.1 hours for undergraduates and 13.4 for postgraduates, the latter being the lowest postgraduate figure of the five.
