The bar chart sets out how much six nations spent on health care in 2015, expressed as a share of GDP and divided into public and private funding.
Overall, the state was the main source of health funding everywhere except the USA, usually by a very wide margin. The USA was also by far the biggest spender in total, while Mexico devoted the smallest share of its national income to health.
Public expenditure was remarkably similar across five of the six nations. Japan topped the list at 9.1% of GDP, followed by France (8.6%), Germany (8.4%), the USA (8.1%) and the UK (7.7%), a spread of only 1.4 percentage points. Mexico lagged far behind, with a government outlay of just 3.1%, roughly a third of the Japanese figure.
Private spending, by contrast, varied enormously. At 8.6% of GDP, the American figure was more than three times that of any other country and narrowly exceeded the nation's own public contribution. Elsewhere, privately funded care amounted to between 1.7% in Japan and 2.8% in Mexico. Mexico was nevertheless the only other country where the two sectors were almost evenly matched, the gap being a mere 0.3 points. Combined, the two categories gave the USA a total of 16.7%, nearly three times Mexico's 5.9%.
