Overall, solitary living became more common in every age group, most sharply in the second half of the twentieth century. The oldest group was always the most likely to live alone, and its lead over the others widened markedly.
In 1850, living alone was rare at any age: the figures ranged from just 1.2% of 17–26-year-olds to 3.6% of those aged 57 and over, rising in step with age. The following century brought only modest growth among the under-47s, none of whose rates had reached 5% by 1950. The two oldest groups diverged from this pattern, however, climbing to 7.4% and 12.8%, the latter more than three times its starting level.
By 2000, just over a quarter of people aged 57 and over (25.3%) lived alone, a sevenfold increase over 150 years and almost double the rate for the next oldest group (13.2%). The younger brackets also recorded their steepest rises in this period; the figure for 27–36-year-olds roughly tripled from 3.6% to 10.7%, which moved them ahead of the 37–46 group (9.8%) for the first time. Those aged 17–26 remained the least likely to live alone, at 6.4%.
