Bar chart — Time spent on household chores by men and women

The chart sets out the average number of minutes that men and women in one country devoted each day to six household jobs in 2015.

Overall, women shouldered the greater share of domestic work, and the imbalance was most pronounced in the routine indoor chores. Men spent longer than women on only two tasks, gardening and home repairs.

Cooking was women's longest task, at 74 minutes a day, roughly two and a half times the 29 minutes recorded for men. The disparity was proportionally even wider for cleaning, on which women spent 58 minutes as opposed to 14 for men, and widest of all for laundry, where the female figure of 25 minutes was more than six times the male one of a mere 4 minutes.

Food shopping was the task most evenly divided, occupying women for 31 minutes and men for 23. The pattern was reversed for the remaining two activities: men gardened for 34 minutes, their most time-consuming task and nearly double the 18 for women, and devoted 26 minutes to home repairs, almost four times the 7 spent by women. Even so, these two areas did not offset the difference elsewhere, since the six tasks together took up 213 minutes of a woman's day but only 130 of a man's.
