The two bar charts give a breakdown by gender of the proportion of 14-to-16-year-olds in England who took a modern foreign language at school in 1984 and in 2007.
Overall, French was the most widely studied language in both years despite losing a large share of its learners, and German also declined, whereas Spanish and other languages gained ground. Girls were more likely than boys to study every language at both dates.
In 1984, French was taken by 55% of girls and 42% of boys, well over twice the figures for German (21% and 16%). By 2007 both languages had lost popularity: French had dropped to 34% of girls and 26% of boys, a fall of almost two fifths, while German stood at 14% and 11%, about a third lower. As a result, the gender gap in French narrowed from 13 to 8 percentage points.
Spanish, by contrast, more than doubled its share, from 7% to 15% among girls and from 4% to 9% among boys. Among girls it therefore overtook German by a single point, although boys still favoured German slightly. Other languages remained marginal, edging up from 4% to 6% for girls and from 3% to 5% for boys; the one-point gap between the sexes was the smallest in either chart.
