The bar chart gives figures for the average crowd at top-flight football matches in England, Germany and Italy at ten-year intervals from 1980 to 2010.

Overall, attendances in England and Germany ended the period far higher than they began, despite an early dip, whereas Italian crowds grew at first and then shrank. As a result, the ranking was completely reversed, with Italy falling from first place to last.

In 1980, English and German matches drew similar crowds of 24,600 and 22,900 respectively, and both figures slipped over the next decade, to 20,800 and 19,700. Thereafter the two countries recovered strongly. England climbed to 31,200 in 2000 and 35,300 in 2010, while Germany's rise was steeper still: having reached 28,400 in 2000, its average surged to 42,100, more than double the 1990 level and the highest figure on the chart.

Italy followed the opposite pattern. Its matches were the best attended in 1980, at 27,500 spectators, and the average peaked at 33,400 in 1990, when it was well ahead of both rivals. However, Italian attendance then went into decline, dropping to 29,900 in 2000 and 24,100 in 2010. By that point, a typical German match attracted 18,000 more spectators than an Italian one.
