The bar chart sets out what proportion of men and women in the UK, in seven age brackets, were fully licensed to drive in 2015.
Overall, men were more likely than women to hold a licence at every age, and this gender gap widened progressively with age. For both sexes, licence holding was lowest among the youngest adults and highest in middle age.
Among 17- to 20-year-olds, only 33% of men and 29% of women had a licence, a difference of just four percentage points. These figures roughly doubled in the 21–29 bracket, to 66% and 61%, and climbed to 81% and 74% among people in their thirties. Up to this point the two sexes remained within seven points of each other.
Thereafter, the patterns diverged. The female figure peaked at 79% in the 40–49 group and declined with each successive bracket, to 77%, 68% and finally 43% among those aged 70 and over. Male licence holding, by contrast, continued to rise to a high of 91% among 50- to 59-year-olds and was still 79% in the oldest group. Consequently, the gap grew from nine points among people in their forties to 21 points at 60–69 and 36 points in the oldest bracket, where men were almost twice as likely as women to be licensed.
