The bar chart compares how much Australians spent in 2011 on six kinds of goods at department stores and at online retailers, in billions of Australian dollars.

Overall, department stores took more money than their internet rivals in four of the six categories, and by a wide margin in clothing and homeware. Online stores came out ahead only in electronics and in books and music.

Clothing was by far the biggest-selling category in department stores, generating A$5.8 billion, almost three times as much as the A$2.1 billion spent on clothes online. The imbalance was even greater for homeware and cosmetics: department stores sold A$4.1 billion and A$2.7 billion respectively, whereas online sales of each fell short of A$1 billion (A$0.8 billion and A$0.6 billion). Traditional shops therefore outsold their online counterparts roughly fivefold in homeware and more than fourfold in cosmetics.

The picture was reversed in two categories. Electronics was the best seller online at A$3.9 billion, A$0.7 billion more than department stores managed, while books and music brought in A$2.6 billion online against a mere A$0.9 billion in stores. Toys were the only category in which the two channels were almost level, at A$1.4 billion and A$1.3 billion. In total, department stores turned over A$18.1 billion, against A$11.3 billion online.
