Bar chart — Citrus fruit exports of five countries, 2012

The bar chart compares five countries in terms of how much of three citrus fruits, namely oranges, lemons and grapefruit, they sold abroad in 2012, with volumes given in thousands of tonnes.

Overall, oranges dominated the trade in every country except Turkey, where lemons took first place. Spain was comfortably the largest exporter of citrus fruit, while grapefruit was the least exported of the three overall.

Spain shipped 1,620 thousand tonnes of oranges, roughly half as much again as South Africa (1,060) and Egypt (1,050), whose figures were virtually identical. The USA followed with 690 thousand tonnes, whereas Turkey managed only 310, under a fifth of the Spanish figure.

Lemons presented a different picture. Spain again led with 540 thousand tonnes, exactly a third of its orange exports, but Turkey was not far behind with 440, making it the only country where lemon exports exceeded those of oranges. The remaining three exported far less, from 170 thousand tonnes in South Africa down to a mere 35 in Egypt. As for grapefruit, the USA (250) and South Africa (215) were the main suppliers, and in both cases this fruit outstripped lemons. Turkey exported 160 thousand tonnes, while Spain's 55 and Egypt's 12 were negligible by comparison.
