The bar chart compares the sums of money that five international organisations donated to developing countries each year from 2008 to 2011, in billions of US dollars.
Overall, Organisation A was the largest donor in every year and, along with Organisation C, was one of only two bodies whose aid grew continuously. By contrast, funding from Organisation B shrank steadily, while Organisation D consistently gave the least and barely changed.
Organisation A's aid rose year on year, from $8.2 billion in 2008 to $11.8 billion in 2011, a gain of $3.6 billion. Growth at Organisation C was far more dramatic: starting from only $3.1 billion, its figure more than tripled to $9.7 billion. Having leapfrogged both B and E in 2010, it finished just $2.1 billion behind the leader, compared with $5.1 billion at the outset.
Organisation B moved in the opposite direction. The second-biggest donor in 2008 with $7.5 billion, it gave less each year and ended on $4.9 billion, in fourth place. Organisation E followed no clear trend, peaking at $5.9 billion in 2009, dropping to $4.2 billion a year later and recovering to $5.3 billion. Organisation D, meanwhile, hovered between $2.3 and $2.5 billion, so that by 2011 it was giving barely a fifth as much as Organisation A.
