Cheap flights, online booking and relaxed visa rules have put foreign travel within reach of ordinary families, not just the wealthy. Although this creates real problems for some destinations, I believe the advantages of the change clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
The economic benefits are the most visible. Tourism brings foreign currency into regions that often have few other industries, and it creates work for guides, drivers, cooks and craftspeople, frequently in places where young people would otherwise have no choice but to migrate. Heritage sites and traditional crafts also survive partly because visitors pay to see them; a temple or a weaving village that earns its keep is far more likely to be maintained than one that does not. Just as important is the human effect: meeting people in their own country chips away at stereotypes in a way that no documentary can.
The disadvantages, however, are genuine. Popular cities suffer from overtourism, with crowded streets, short-term rentals pushing up local rents, and residents effectively priced out of their own neighbourhoods. Aviation also accounts for a significant share of global carbon emissions, and a weekend flight is hard to justify environmentally.
What tips the balance for me is that these problems are largely manageable through policy, whereas the benefits are structural. Cities have begun to limit cruise arrivals, charge tourist taxes and regulate holiday lets, and several governments now tax flights according to distance. Where such measures are applied, visitors continue to arrive and residents keep their neighbourhoods.
Overall, then, easier international travel spreads income, protects cultural heritage and broadens people's outlook. Its costs are real but controllable, so on balance the development is clearly positive.
