Some councils choose to direct their limited budgets towards new indoor sports centres instead of maintaining parks and open spaces. Although modern leisure facilities bring real benefits, I believe the disadvantages of neglecting green space in their favour are considerably greater.
The case for indoor centres is straightforward. They operate regardless of the weather, which in a wet climate means people can exercise all year rather than only in summer. They also support activities that parks cannot, such as swimming, climbing and organised team sports, and they generate income through membership fees and café sales, which helps to offset running costs. For older residents or people with disabilities, a warm, level, supervised environment is often the only realistic option.
Nevertheless, these advantages come at a heavy price. Firstly, a sports centre serves those who pay, whereas a park is free at the point of use; a struggling family can picnic, run and play for nothing, but cannot afford a monthly membership. Secondly, parks deliver benefits that go far beyond exercise. Trees cool overheated cities, absorb rainwater and improve air quality, and research repeatedly shows that time spent among greenery lowers stress and improves concentration. Thirdly, open space, once built on, is almost impossible to recover, while a neglected park quickly becomes unsafe and unloved, which then justifies further cuts. A single centre may attract several hundred users a day; a well-kept park in the same town can host thousands, most of whom will never set foot in a gym.
In conclusion, while indoor centres offer all-weather facilities and some income, they benefit a narrower group and cannot replace what parks provide for health, climate and social equality. Public money should maintain green spaces first and add indoor facilities where budgets allow, not the other way round.
