Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to the council's proposal to introduce a segregated cycle lane and a one-way system along Elm Road. As a resident of eleven years, I would like to put forward my views before the consultation closes.
In principle, I welcome the cycle lane. Elm Road is currently used as a cut-through by drivers avoiding the High Street, and cars regularly exceed the 20 mph limit outside the school. A protected lane would make the road safer for children and encourage more of us to cycle.
However, I have serious concerns about the one-way element. Under the plan, residents at the northern end would have to drive almost a mile around the park to reach home, and the displaced traffic would pour into Willow Close, a narrow street with no pavements. The proposal also removes fourteen parking spaces without making any provision for the elderly residents of Elm Court.
I would therefore urge the council to proceed with the cycle lane but reconsider the one-way system, and to hold a public meeting at which residents can examine the traffic modelling.
