Great news that you're finally coming over next month — I can't wait to show you around!
For somewhere to stay, I'd go for the Old Mill Guesthouse by the river. It's a ten-minute walk from the station, the rooms are cosy, and the owner, Meg, does a proper cooked breakfast that will set you up for the day. It's about £60 a night, which is a bargain for this part of town. The big hotels by the ring road are cheaper, but you'd need a bus everywhere and they're pretty soulless.
As for things to do, walk up Beacon Hill first thing in the morning — the view over the harbour is worth the climb. The Saturday market is great for local cheese and second-hand books, and a brilliant little jazz bar on Quay Street gets going after nine. If the weather's decent, we could hire bikes and ride the old railway line out to the lighthouse.
I've got that week fairly free, so I can pick you up from the station and play tour guide whenever you like. Just send me your train times once you've booked.
